The OS you have now and the computing power of your hardware will determine which path you will need to follow to switch to Windows 7. If installing Windows 7 on an older machine, it's probably best to check with the Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser program and visit the Windows 7 Compatibility Center to see whether your machine is compatible or if you are likely to see the improvements in speed that the Windows 7 can offer. There are three primary paths for switching to Windows 7:
Your first option, is to buy a new computer. Then transfer your data and enjoy Windows 7.
If you are upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 you are in luck. Microsoft has created a direct upgrade path. Computers that can run Windows Vista will most certainly run Windows 7. It is unlikely Windows Vista computers will require a hardware upgrade or new device drivers. If you have experience installing applications and operating systems you will be able to do the Windows 7 installation yourself without much problem however it still is a wise move to do a clean install of Windows 7 but Microsoft has created a procedure to so you don't' have to go through that.
If you are upgrading from Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro then it is a lot more difficult. Microsoft's recommendation and the best way to go about moving up to Win 7 is to perform a "clean install". While there are important benefits to a clean install it is likely to take a significant amount of time because the directory structure is different between XP and 7 (anywhere from one hour to four hours plus reinstalling all your applications and drivers). Be aware that some applications may not work without a "fresh" installation and new drivers. Since Microsoft does not provide a direct upgrade path from Windows XP to Windows 7, you must do a complete re-install from scratch. That means back up all your valuable data because you may lose it. Get organized to reinstall all your existing applications, add-ons and up-to-date drivers. You will want to make an inventory of everything you have installed which includes digging out all your original install discs and license keys. List all the drivers you have installed to support your accessory devices and don't forget to include all the programs you downloaded. Then after you collect all this in one handy place you are ready to install Windows 7. When Windows 7 is completely installed then reinstall all your applications and upgrade all your drivers then reload your backed up data. Of course, it is a lot of work and difficult if you are not familiar with the steps.
